Iberian Light

Visiting Portugal for the first time in the late 1970s, the dramatic intensity of the light deeply impressed me and I feel it fitting therefore, that the focus of my first print series should be the striking and varied light of the Iberian Peninsular. Whilst my earliest visits were during the summer months, working in Portugal for a second time in the late 1990s allowed me to photograph the colours of Iberia under changing seasons. Blue skies and the bright, almost white light of summer visits were transformed to the fluctuating, piercing sunlight and brooding skies of late winter and early spring. Days of softer, diffuse light revealed a previously unseen palette of more pastel colour. The Iberian Light collection is drawn from these experiences.

All the images in this series were originated on transparency film. The collection was first shown in an exhibition at Bloomsbury Design, London in January 2022. I have added a small number of additional prints to the original selection for the exhibition.
